The 4 Steps to Certification in Oregon

1

Pick a Board-Approved Program

The Oregon State Board of Nursing approves every CNA 1 program. Your options:

  • ✓Care employers: several nursing homes and care companies train new hires for free.
  • ✓Community colleges: some CNA courses qualify for financial aid or scholarships.
  • ✓Private schools: set their own prices and schedules.
2

Complete 155 Hours

Oregon requires 80 more hours than the federal minimum.

80 Hours
Classroom and lab
75 Hours
Clinical

You need at least 24 hours of classroom and lab work before you care for patients.

3

Pass the State Exam

A knowledge test and a skills test, given by Headmaster. You pay the Board of Nursing, and the fee includes the exam.

Certification + exam$106
Retake knowledge / skills$25 / $45
Oral knowledge test+$35
AttemptsNo limit within 1 year
Watch the deadlines: apply within one year of finishing training, then pass within one year of applying. You can retest as many times as you need in that year.
4

Renew Every Two Years

Submit your renewal to the Board before your certificate expires.

  • ●Work at least 400 paid hours as a CNA in the last two years. This doesn't apply if you were certified or passed the exam less than two years ago.
  • ●Pay $64: the $60 renewal fee plus a $4 workforce data surcharge.
  • ●Lapsed? Reactivation costs $65.
