New Jersey requires 90 hours of training, 15 more than the federal minimum, and the Department of Health certifies nurse aides, not the Board of Nursing. You take the skills test with D&S and the written or oral test with PSI.

Pick an Approved Program
The Department of Health approves every nurse aide program. Before you start:
- Choose your route: community college, adult vocational program, private school, or a nursing home that trains its hires.
- Fingerprint background check: required for everyone. The state doesn't charge to process the form.
- Watch for false answers: a false background check application bars you for at least two years.

The clock starts early: once you take your first skills test, you have one year to pass everything. Fail three times and you go back to a 90-hour program.

Renew Every Two Years
Renewal happens in person at a PSI test site.
- Work at least 7 paid hours providing nursing services in the 24 months before you expire.
- Bring an employer-signed form, two IDs, and the $36 fee.
- Don't miss the date: your certificate expires immediately. Reminders go out about 60 days before.

Route 1: Continuing Education
You're on your state's registry in good standing and completed the required continuing education in the last 24 months. No New Jersey test needed.
Route 2: Work Experience
You have at least two years of full-time nurse aide work, with your latest job in the past 24 months. You'll also need to pass the skills and written or oral tests.

The New Jersey Department of Health approves these facilities to run nurse aide classes on site. They usually train people they plan to hire, and federal rules bar Medicare and Medicaid nursing homes from charging their own employees for training or testing.
