CNA Training in Minnesota
Minnesota requires at least 75 hours of nurse aide training, including at least 16 hours of supervised hands-on practice with a live person. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) approves programs and runs the Nurse Aide Registry, and Headmaster (D&S Diversified Technologies) runs the state exam.

Pick a State-Approved Program
MDH approves every nurse aide training program. Your options:
- Colleges: including Minnesota State colleges such as Hennepin Technical, Lake Superior, Rochester Community and Technical, and St. Cloud Technical and Community College.
- Nursing homes and senior care providers: many train people they hire, and certified nursing homes can't charge you for it.
- Private schools and Job Corps: private schools set their own prices. Hubert H. Humphrey Job Corps in St. Paul is free for eligible young adults.

Complete at Least 75 Hours
Every approved curriculum must be at least 75 hours. Some programs teach part of the class online, but hands-on training is always in person.

If a nursing home hires you before you train, you must finish training, pass both tests, and be on the registry within 4 months.

Pass the Knowledge and Skills Tests
Headmaster runs both tests. You can test at a Minnesota State college or at an MDH-approved in-facility test site.

Testing limits: You get 4 tries at the knowledge test and 3 tries at the skills test within 24 months of finishing training. Use them up and you must train again before you can retest.

Stay Active
Stay active on the Minnesota Nurse Aide Registry.
- Work at least 8 hours as a paid nursing assistant every 24 months. A 24-month gap in work makes your registry status expire.
- Send proof to MDH using the Nursing Assistant Registry Update form with a recent pay stub, at least once every 24 months.
- Keep your address current so MDH can mail your expiration notice. Processing can take 30 business days.

✨ Free When You're HiredIf a certified nursing home or boarding care home employs you or has offered you a job before training starts, it can't charge you for any part of training or testing. If you paid first, the first nursing home where you work at least 90 days must pay you back, as long as you turn in receipts within 1 year of getting on the registry.

Who certifies CNAs in Minnesota?
The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) approves training programs and runs the Nurse Aide Registry. Headmaster (D&S Diversified Technologies) runs the state exam.
How long is CNA training in Minnesota?
At least 75 hours, including at least 16 hours of supervised hands-on practice with a live person.
How much does the CNA exam cost in Minnesota?
Each test site sets its own price. At Alexandria Technical & Community College it is $270 for both tests ($100 knowledge, $170 skills). Ask your test site for its price.
How many times can I take the exam?
4 tries at the knowledge test and 3 tries at the skills test within 24 months of finishing training.
Can I get CNA training for free in Minnesota?
Yes. A certified nursing home can't charge you if it employs you or has offered you a job before training. Hubert H. Humphrey Job Corps in St. Paul is free for eligible young adults, and CareerForce can help pay if you qualify.
How do I stay on the Minnesota registry?
Work at least 8 hours as a paid nursing assistant every 24 months and send MDH the Nursing Assistant Registry Update form with a recent pay stub.
