Your route

Which home health aide training do you need?

New York has a full course for newcomers and shorter routes for people who already have some training.

New to caregiving

Core HHA training

75 hrs

  • 59 hours of classroom and 16 hours of supervised practical training.
  • Practical training uses a volunteer or “pseudo-patient,” not a mannequin.
  • Written tests need a score of at least 80%.

Personal care aide

PCA upgrade

35 hrs

  • 19 classroom hours plus 16 supervised practical hours.
  • For aides who already finished PCA training (40 hours minimum).
  • You can’t go straight from a PCA class into an upgrade class.

Already a CNA

CNA transition

Shorter

  • You don’t repeat what your CNA program covered.
  • The program adds the home care skills a nursing home course doesn’t teach.
  • Ask each program how many hours its transition course is.

Big money saver: programs approved by the Department of Health can charge you no more than $100, and only for items you keep. Anything above that requires State Education Department approval instead, so ask who approved a program before you pay more.

The steps

How to become a home health aide in New York

New York doesn’t issue a state certificate card. Your training is recorded in the Home Care Worker Registry.

  1. Choose an approved programPick a site from the list below. Many are home care agencies that train and then hire their own aides.
  2. Complete training75 hours for core training, finished within 60 days of starting, including the competency evaluation.
  3. Pass the competency evaluationWritten tests (80% to pass) plus skills you show on a volunteer. Weak spots get retraining, not a full restart.
  4. Get on the RegistryThe program records your completion in the state’s Home Care Worker Registry, which agencies check before hiring.

Keep working. If you go 24 months in a row without working as a home health aide for a licensed agency, you’re no longer considered qualified. You can come back through the competency evaluation instead of retraining.

Some people can skip straight to the competency evaluation.

Competency evaluation only

Nursing assistants with a year of full-time hospital experience in the last 5 years, and some out-of-state aides, nursing students, and military medics, can qualify through a competency evaluation program instead of full training.

Training in your language

Programs can teach in another language if the nurse instructor is fluent, one language per class, with no interpreter. Use the language filter below: sites teach in Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Korean, and more.

Short answers to what people ask most.

How long is home health aide training in New York?

75 hours for core training: 59 hours of classroom and 16 hours of supervised practical training, finished within 60 days. Personal care aides can upgrade with 35 hours, and CNAs take a shorter transition course.

How much does home health aide training cost in New York?

Programs approved by the Department of Health may charge trainees no more than $100, and only for items the trainee keeps. Programs approved by the State Education Department can charge more.

Do I get a license or certificate from the state?

Your completion is recorded in New York's Home Care Worker Registry, which licensed home care agencies check before hiring. Your training program also gives you a certificate.

Can a CNA work as a home health aide in New York?

Not automatically. CNAs take a transition course that adds home care skills the nurse aide program didn't cover.

Can I take home health aide training in Spanish or Chinese?

After 24 months in a row without home health aide work for a licensed agency, you're no longer considered qualified, but you can return by passing a competency evaluation.
