Illinois home health agencies can hire aides who are approved on the IDPH Health Care Worker Registry.
The usual way onto the registry is finishing a state-approved CNA program (listed below) and passing the competency test.
Agencies must check the registry for abuse or neglect findings before hiring.

A nursing arts course with at least 40 hours of supervised clinicals, military medical training, or a foreign nursing program can count.
Each also needs a pass on the written part of the state nursing assistant test.
Registration from another state can also count.

Keep your hours up. Federal rules require at least 12 hours of in-service training a year, and if you go 24 months in a row without paid aide work, you must retrain.

How do I keep my Illinois CNA active?

Work at least one 8-hour paid shift doing nursing or nursing-related work under a licensed nurse within every 24 months.

Does Illinois certify home health aides?

Illinois doesn't issue a separate home health aide license. Under 77 Ill. Adm. Code 245.70, aides must be on the IDPH Health Care Worker Registry, finish a state-approved training program, or meet an equivalency. A registered nurse at the agency also checks each aide's skills.

How do I become a home health aide in Illinois?

The two most common routes are completing a 75-hour home health aide training and competency evaluation, or becoming a CNA. Federal rules count a CNA in good standing on the Illinois nurse aide registry as a qualified home health aide.

How much do home health aides make in Illinois?

The median pay for home health and personal care aides in Illinois is $18.30 an hour, about $38,060 a year, based on the May 2025 federal wage survey. Illinois CNAs earn a median $22.10 an hour.

Can a CNA work as a home health aide?

Yes, for Medicare and Medicaid home health agencies, if the CNA completed a state-approved program and is listed in good standing on the state nurse aide registry.
