CNA Training in New York
New York requires 100 hours of nurse aide training, including 30 hours of supervised clinical work in a nursing home. The State Education Department approves school programs, the Department of Health approves nursing home programs, and Prometric gives the state exam.

Renew Every Two Years
Your certificate is good for 24 months. Your employer handles the renewal.
- Work at least 7 paid hours as a nurse aide in the past 24 months, at a New York nursing home or approved employer.
- Your employer files the form and pays the $40 fee. It can't charge you for it.

New York CNA Questions, Answered
Who certifies CNAs in New York?
The New York State Department of Health certifies nurse aides and keeps the registry, with Prometric giving the exam. The State Education Department approves programs at colleges and schools, and the Department of Health approves programs run by nursing homes.
How long is CNA training in New York?
At least 100 hours, including 30 hours of supervised clinical training with nursing home residents.
Can I get CNA training for free in New York?
Yes. Nursing home training programs approved by the Department of Health must be free, and nursing homes pay the first exam fees for their trainees. If you paid yourself and a nursing home hires you within a year, you may get part of it back.
How many times can I take the CNA test?
Three times for each part, and you have two years to pass both. Retests cost $68 for skills and $57 for the written test.
Do I have to pay to renew my CNA in New York?
No. Your employer files the renewal and pays the $40 fee every two years, as long as you've worked at least 7 paid hours as a nurse aide in the past 24 months.
How do I transfer my CNA to New York?
Apply through Prometric with a copy of your current out-of-state certificate and training information, plus the $50 fee. You don't need to retest.
