CNA Training in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania requires at least 80 hours of nurse aide training, and many programs run longer. The Pennsylvania Department of Education approves training programs, the Department of Health keeps the Nurse Aide Registry, and Credentia gives the state exam.

Pick a State-Approved Program
The Pennsylvania Department of Education approves every nurse aide program. Your options:
- Nursing homes: must pay your training and testing costs if they employ you.
- Community colleges: offer noncredit nurse aide courses, and some have scholarships.
- Private schools: set their own prices and schedules.
You must be at least 16 to test, and you'll need a criminal history check before training starts.

Don't pay out of pocket if you can avoid it: if you work at a Pennsylvania nursing home, your employer pays the exam fees, including retests. A no-show counts as one of your three attempts.

Renew Every Two Years
The Department of Health mails a notice about 90 days before you expire. You can renew online through Credentia.
- Work at least 8 paid hours as a nurse aide in the past 24 months, at a nursing home, hospital, home health agency, or home care agency.
- Self-employed and private duty work don't count.
- Lapsed 24 months or more? Your registry listing is no longer valid.

Pennsylvania CNA Questions, Answered
Who certifies CNAs in Pennsylvania?
Three agencies share the job. The Pennsylvania Department of Education approves training programs, the Department of Health keeps the Nurse Aide Registry, and Credentia runs the exam and handles registry renewals.
How long is CNA training in Pennsylvania?
At least 80 hours, including 37.5 hours of clinical training. Some programs run longer, like HACC's 120-hour course.
Can I get CNA training for free in Pennsylvania?
Yes. Nursing homes must pay the full cost of training and testing for nurse aides they employ. If you pay yourself and a nursing home hires you within 12 months, it has to pay you back.
How many times can I take the CNA test?
Three times, within two years of finishing training. A no-show counts as an attempt. If you fail either part three times, you need to complete a new training program.
How old do I have to be to become a CNA in Pennsylvania?
You must be at least 16 to take the exam. Some employers require you to be 18.
