CNA Training in Texas

Texas does two things most states don't. It requires 100 hours of training instead of the federal minimum of 75, and it lets you take the 60 classroom hours online for free through a course built by the state's Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC).

That means the only part you pay a school for is the 40-hour clinical. Below you'll find each step to the Texas Nurse Aide Registry, current Prometric exam fees, pay by metro area, and approved programs from Dallas to El Paso.

The 4 Steps to Certification in Texas

1

Pick a Program That Will Take You

Texas lets each approved program (called a NATCEP) set its own admission rules, so check before you apply:

  • ✓Minimum age varies: some community colleges accept students at 16, many private schools require 18.
  • ✓Background check: you cannot be listed as unemployable on the Texas Employee Misconduct Registry.
  • ✓Health records: expect a TB test and proof of immunizations before clinicals.
2

The 100-Hour Rule

Texas requires 25 more hours than the federal minimum. The classroom part can be done online, free.

60 Hours
Classroom (free HHSC online course allowed)
40 Hours
Clinical (in person)

The online classroom must be finished within 12 months before clinicals. Clinicals run with at least 1 instructor for every 10 students.

3

Pass the Prometric Exam

Apply in the state's TULIP portal. Once your program uploads your completion, Prometric emails your login to schedule and pay.

Written + Clinical Skills$125
Oral + Clinical Skills$125
Clinical Skills retake$92
Written or Oral retake$33
Tip: Prometric publishes the exact checklist evaluators use for the skills test. Practice every step on it. The written test is offered in English and Spanish. Get the checklist
4

Registry & Renewal

Pass both parts and HHSC lists you on the Texas Nurse Aide Registry.

  • ●Cost: $0. HHSC charges nothing to list or renew you.
  • ●Expires: 24 months after listing or after your last verified paid work as a nurse aide, whichever comes first.
  • ●To renew: proof of paid nursing work (Form 5506-NAR), 24 hours of in-service education every 2 years, and the HHSC infection control and PPE course every year.

💰 How to Get CNA Training Free in Texas

Between the state's free online classroom and federal rules on nursing home training costs, many Texas CNAs pay little or nothing. Here is how each option actually works.

HHSC Online Classroom Course

✨ 60 Hours, $0
ℹ️HHSC's computer-based training covers all 60 classroom hours at your own pace. Every approved program in Texas is required to accept it.
⚡You still need a program for the 40-hour clinical, and you must start clinicals within 12 months of finishing the course.

Nursing Home Paid Training

✨ Federal Rule Protects You
ℹ️Medicare and Medicaid nursing homes cannot charge their own employees, or people they've offered a job, for CNA training or testing. If one hires you within 12 months of finishing, it must reimburse what you paid.
⚡Get the work commitment in writing, and ask what you owe if you leave early.

Workforce Solutions (WIOA)

✨ Grants for Eligible Job Seekers
ℹ️Texas has local Workforce Solutions offices run through the Texas Workforce Commission. They can fund training at approved schools for eligible unemployed or low-income residents.
⚡Apply before you enroll. Funding is rarely approved after classes start.

Job Corps (Ages 16 to 24)

✨ Free Training & Housing
ℹ️Texas has four campuses: El Paso (David L. Carrasco), San Marcos (Gary), Laredo, and McKinney (North Texas), for young adults from low-income households.
⚡Enrollment has been disrupted since 2025. Call first to confirm the campus is enrolling and offers healthcare training.

Texas CNA Pay by Metro Area

Texas has about 88,680 nursing assistants. Pay runs highest in Austin and Dallas-Fort Worth and lowest along the border, so where you train can matter as much as where you live.

Area Median Hourly Median Annual CNAs Employed
Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos $18.53 $38,550 5,600
Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington $18.53 $38,530 23,420
Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands $18.26 $37,970 19,230
San Antonio-New Braunfels $17.69 $36,800 7,080
El Paso $16.91 $35,170 2,310
Brownsville-Harlingen $15.44 $32,110 1,070
Texas (statewide) $18.03 $37,500 88,680

What It Costs to Get Certified

The fixed costs in Texas are low. The one number that varies is the clinical program's tuition, so compare schools on that.

Classroom

$0

With HHSC's free online course. Schools that teach the classroom in person charge for it.

Clinical Program

Set by the school

Ask each school what's included: scrubs, books, background check, and exam voucher.

Prometric Exam

$125

Written or oral plus clinical skills, at fees effective September 1, 2026.

Registry & Renewal

$0

HHSC charges no fee to list you on the registry or renew.

Moving to Texas? (Reciprocity)

If you are active on any other state's nurse aide registry, Texas can add you to its registry without retraining or retesting. There is no state fee.

Active CNA in Another State

Submit the Request for Entry Through Reciprocity in TULIP. You must be active on the other state's registry and not listed as unemployable on the Texas Employee Misconduct Registry.

Trained Out of State, Never Certified

Apply in TULIP as a new nurse aide by exam and choose the out-of-state training route. You take the Prometric exam but skip Texas training.

Military Medical Training

At least 100 hours of military training equivalent to civilian nurse aide training can qualify you to test without a Texas program.

No programs match. Try a nearby city or pick "All regions."

Before you call: programs run by a nursing home or rehab center often train only people they plan to hire. That can work in your favor, since those facilities usually cover the cost. Community colleges are open to anyone. Always confirm a program is still approved and ask when the next class starts.

Texas CNA Questions, Answered

Can I take CNA classes online in Texas?

Partly. All 60 classroom hours can be done online through HHSC's free course, and every approved program must accept it. The 40 clinical hours have to be done in person with a program.

How long does it take?

It depends on the schedule, but 100 hours goes faster than people expect. For example, North Central Texas College's fall 2026 schedule runs the online classroom and the clinicals back to back in about a month.

What if I fail one part of the exam?

You only retake the part you failed. A clinical skills retake is $92 and a written or oral retake is $33.

Can I take the test in Spanish?

Yes. Prometric offers the Texas written exam in English and Spanish, and an oral version is available if reading is a barrier.

Do I have to pay to renew?

No. Renewal is free, but you need verified paid nursing work, 24 hours of in-service education every two years, and the yearly HHSC infection control and PPE course. If you stop working as a nurse aide, the 24-month clock runs from your last verified job.

How do I check if a CNA is active in Texas?

Use the registry search in the state's TULIP portal. It also shows Medication Aide status.
